It is time for the TV’s biggest night again. The 59th primetime Emmys are just around the corner. The Sopranos has a good chance of a sweep. It has 15 nominations this time including best drama series and its stars, James Gandolfini and Edie Falco. . But there is a small detail that cannot be overlooked. No programme that has been off the air has won the Emmy for outstanding drama series in 30 years.

But there is a dire problem with the Emmys that is often overlooked. The judgment is made based on a single episode out of the entire season. This often is in breach of the public taste and sometimes even the critics.

The viewers however have a different take on the process. They would like to see the award go to the series with best season rather than having producers picking the best episode of the season.

When the envelope in opened to declare the best actor or actress, the viewers expect it to go to the one who has performed consistently well over the entire season. There is a huge difference between performance in a single episode and that of an entire season. Perhaps that is the reason why the result often comes as a major shock rather than a delight.

The Emmys have almost become a platform to promote programs that are struggling in rating and promotion of new or upcoming TV shows. The classic example would be that of the first season of Hill Street Blues.

But this theory however fails to explain the strange omissions of certain series like the Television Critics Association Award winner Friday Night Lights, which is nominated for just one award Sunday: best directing. Also it doesn’t explain the apprehensive omission of Dexter’s Michael C. Hall or The Riches’ Eddie Izzard in the best actor category. What is even more bizarre is the complete snub of The Wire, which currently some consider to be the best TV drama.

The Sopranos will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. They are dominating the buzz in the 59th Emmys. Although this is not the highest number of nominations they have received (22 in the year 2001). They could break their own record of the number of wins in a single year.

It is nominated in seven different categories on Sunday, which includes three out of a possible five nominations for best screenplay. The other nominations are for the very popular series Lost and the space adventure drama Battlestar Galactica.

If The Sopranos manage to win five or more awards it will prove the popular notion that “crime does pay” (well at least on TV).

Edie Falco who played the famous Mob wife Carmela Soprano in “The Sopranos” is now starring as a nurse in her own series “Nurse Jackie” which is a darkly funny comedy premiered on Showtime. Falco plays a highly experienced, twisted emergency room nurse in New York’s All Saints hospital. She plays a unique character who is partly Florence Nightingale and partly fugitive, addicted to prescription drugs having a bad past. Jackie can go any length for anything she wants like she can have mid-day sex with a staff pharmacist who in return supplies her pain-killers. She can easily break the law and doesn’t think once before flushing a patient’s ear into the toilet.

The 45-year old Falco is a single mother of two children, a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl. She says that single motherhood complicates her acting career but is very happy. This three time Emmy Award winner’s life has been a whirlpool. She is flooded with projects after The Sopranos who until 1990’s was so poor that she lived in Shacks with thousand other roommates. She did everything from waitressing to playing clown at weddings to earn money. Although she has done some films but she is better remembered as a television actress.

Falco has no problems playing Jackie’s character as she herself is a recovering alcoholic who has been a teetotaller for 17 years. Her Swedish origin was e reason for her getting addicted to alcohol and has experienced the damage it can do. Her memories of her scrounging days and her visits to the ER helped her in preparing for “Nurse Jackie”.

Falco has never married though her romance with her co-star Stanley Tucci became very famous. Falco was attracted to theatre quite early because of her mother work at the community theatre but she could never get that big break. She was confident that some day she would get into acting and this strong belief changed things for her. She got several television roles and finally came “The Sopranos”.

According to Falco, neither getting sober nor her 2004 attack with breast cancer was her greatest nightmare. It was the persistent money problems that she faced in 1980’s and early 1990’s. Falco is very open-ended as an actor. Although she plans not to work this summer but if some good project comes up, she would definitely give it a thought.

Smart women more in the vogue than the action-packed, gun-toting men of yore.

Guns and other action-oriented paraphernalia lie unused as the demand for their ilk gets reduced to practically zilch. Premium subscriber television seems to have totally given up on them.

While in the past there were the likes of Tony Soprano with his “Deadwood’s” Al Swearengen which ruled the roost, today women with much sweeter dispositions are preferred by viewers. As a direct result, the producers and creators are also conceiving characters of similar nature. Currently, emotions such as love and faith are given centre-stage. Alongside, the importance of the family is clearly highlighted on all major television programs.

Maturity, as defined by television shows has also got a whole new meaning. While in the past, it almost always implied violence and profanity, today it has gone even further, while leaving the violence behind. What has gone ahead is the openness and boldness with sexuality coming out of the closet and being displayed much more openly, even among teenagers, and shows meant for them.

And it isn’t just networks like HBO which are dropping their guns at a fast pace. Shows like Dexter, hitherto considered rather gory from amongst the shows currently on air, have also brought in a touch of emotionality to them. The central character himself is much more human and thoughtful than before.

Take for instance “The Tudors” which has plenty of intense violence going for it, but at its core, the show is essentially a costume drama, with colourful women prancing all around on the sets of the show. Brains have definitely taken over brawn, across many shows on numerous television networks. Shows like “Eleventh Hour”, “The Mentalist,” “Lie to Me” and “Castle,” have strictly given violence the complete slip. And violent shows like “Life on Mars” have been totally axed.
To give more instances, Patty Hewes, the calculating central character of “Damages” is better with words than being a mob boss. NBC’s “Southland” has violent hues, but only just.

It seems those who felt television had become too violent really need to have a rethink.
Television seems to have been taken over by women or lobbies that control guns. The fact that women dominate television viewers could possibly be a major reason behind the transformation.

There’s also another line of thought wherein it is felt that violent shows had their heydays which are now past the viewers “digestibility”. Additionally, successful violent shows of the past had been replicated over and over again, and so, over a period of time, completely lost their charm.
Therefore, innovators are now riding new waves and rewriting television scripts giving preference to the emotional over the corporeal, the luxuriant over the coarse, the mature over the childish, and the womanly over the manly.
That strategy may not always work and has the serious potential to backfire. This is particularly true of men, as they prefer to view other men while women tend to be more malleable and can watch people from both the genders on television, with equal pleasure.

It is for this reason that the show, “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” an HBO initiative, is unlikely to work.
The show is just too bland with no sex or violence – not even the slightest trace of it, for it to be considered even mildly exciting. It just does not live up to its name and claim to fame. Yet, it may well be considered a truly innovative show, with a fresh treatment and a totally unique approach.

Having said that, you may prefer a video game over the show!

In conclusion, one can safely conclude that human emotions have taken centre stage on all the numerous television shows. And for once, guns have been truly dropped!

But, recently, HBO started re-telecast. Okay, okay, we know fans have been raving about it but what’s it’s appeal?

Tony Soprano, his mafia gang, his regular family plus the Italian cuisine… there’s something to this series you cannot put your finger on in isolation. It’s the tightly knit storyline, the sets, the acting, the emotion, the drama et al that hooks you. Of course we’ve got someone dying at every 30 second spin, but there’s not one episode in any of the entire six-season series (86 episodes) you’d like to fast forward.

Based on the novel by the same name, the series, directed by David Chase, has spawned video games, music albums and merchandise. James Gandolfini has done his job as the mobster trying to juggle home and family life. It has also won 21 Emmys and five Golden Globes. Haven’t you seen it yet?
